Fiction: The Reunion

She paced and rung her hands. She could feel the itchy wool of the rug on the bottoms of her feet and jolted when she stepped off the edge and one foot landed on the cool wood floor.

Her palms were sweaty again.  She nervously wiped them on the legs of her jeans.

Ten minutes.

He'd texted to say he'd be there in ten minutes.

It had been so long since she's seen him. She was nervous which made her feel silly.

It would be normal.  It had to be normal. They'd gone this long without seeing each other before, but this time felt...different... she wasn't really sure why.

She rounded the table and picked up the glass of wine she'd poured.

She sipped. As the cool liquid slid down her throat, she tried to relax.

Sitting down, she put the glass on the table.  It clinked dully against the wood.

Picking up her pen, she looked down at the work she'd brought home, took a deep breath, and tried  to read the paper on top.

It was no use.  She couldn't concentrate.  Too nervous. She ran her hands through her hair, cupped the crown with both hands and dropped her head.  She took another deep breath and tried to release the tension in her neck.

The door bell rang.

She jumped up, startled, because she hadn't heard the car pull up.

Pushing the chair in, she took a minute to center herself.

He was here, it had to be him.

Walking to the door, she braced herself, took another deep breath and reached for the knob.
