Writer's Workshop Repost: My Life in Music

I'm cheating, I'm not even gonna lie. *grins*  When I got this week's list of prompts, I thought, I've done that before! Surprisingly, not that much has changed!

Mama’s Losin’ It

First, let me just say how much fun this was!  It's a good thing Mama Kat posts her prompts on  Tuesday because I kept remembering songs and coming back to revise.

Daddy's Little Girl - Al Martino
You're the spirit of Christmas, my star on the tree/ You're the Easter bunny to mommy and me./ You're sugar and spice, you're everything nice/ And you're Daddy's little girl.

My mom used to sing this to my sister and me as part of our bedtime routine.  When my dad and I danced to it at my wedding, he whispered in my ear, "This song seemed a lot shorter when your mother sang it." This is the verse I remember best and it reminds me of the Sunday morning trips to Dunkin' Donuts my dad and I made when I was little.

Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet
Wastin' away again in margaritaville/ Searching for my lost shaker of salt/ Some people claim that there's a woman to blame/ But I know it's nobody's fault.

Not for the reason's y'all think.  I talk a lot about my crazy-big extended family.  One of my uncles was a true Parrothead, even painting the rear bumper of his Datsun 210 in case there was any doubt.  One of my favorite childhood memories is of 3 of my mother's 4 brothers ~the 4th and youngest, at 19, was I'm sure far too cool to participate~ up on stage with the band at my aunt's wedding belting out the chorus at the top of their lungs.  It's the first time I remember hearing the song. I was 9.

Get Ready for This - 2 Unlimited
Are You Ready for This?

Oh boy...This takes me back.  My high school cheerleading squad choreographed a routine using part of this song my Junior year.  It ended up being so popular that we became a competition squad and won 2nd Place in a national competition.  It was one of those magical times where we accidentally stumbled on something really good and people took notice.  On the rare occasion when my former squad mates and I are together we've been know to break into the routine...like at my friend's wedding last fall.  We can still fake it pretty well!

Teach Your Children Well - Crosby Still Nash & Young
Teach your children what you believe in/ Make a world that we can live in

My life before kids ...It was really hard to find a song about teaching, which is my career by education.  The only other one I could think of was Hot for Teacher and if you read yesterday's post, well, you know I wasn't using that one! The time has come for me to get back into the classroom, hopefully this coming school year.  As a teacher, you always hope you can make a difference.  I hope I've inspired or let a child know I cared and I hope to continue to do so again. ~And as you all know, I'm back in the classroom with gusto!

She's Got a Way - Billy Joel
She's got a way about her/ I don't know what it is/ but I know that I can't live without her

I debated about including this one, but it was, in fact, a very big and important part of my life.  This was the song my ex and I danced to at our wedding.  It was a happy day and sometimes when he's made me exceptionally mad, it helps to remember that it wasn't always ALL bad.  Plus, without the marriage, I wouldn't have my kids and they make it all worth it.

You Can't Lose Me - Faith Hill
You can't lose me/ Bet your life/ I am here and I always will be/ Just a wish away/ Wherever you go/No matter how far away/ My love will be where you are

Are there any better words to sum up what a mother wants her kids to know...unconditional love?  My kids...they are what gets me up and going in the morning (literally and figuratively)...they are what keeps me going.

The Mom Song - Anita Renfroe

I can't possibly isolate one verse - it the whole dang song- it is my life and I wouldn't change a thing! But just to jog your memory, it goes something like this:

And tomorrow we will do this all again because a mom's work never ends/ You don't need the reason why/ because/ I said so/ I'm the mom

Tough- Craig Morgan
She's strong, pushes on, can't slow her down/ She can take anything life dishes out

Well, life sort of kicked me in the a$$ a few years back and it's taken some time to get my feet back under me.  But, while it gave me a good swift kick it hasn't knocked me down  yet and it has shown me that I'm strong and I can do it on my own.  And you know what, if this is the worst I ever get, well, life ain't so bad!

Sweet Home Alabama- Lynnard Skynnard
Sweet Home Alabama/ Lord I'm coming home to you

Truthfully, I had a completely different song about the south picked out, but then I realized that it totally gave me away, so I changed it to this one, even though I don't live in Alabama.  I do feel like I am home here in the South, more so than anywhere else I've lived as an adult.  I hope it feels that way to my kids too.  We have built a new life here and this is home... Plus, I love, Love, LOVE this movie and I want Reese Witherspoon to play me in the movie of my life :)

Whatever It Is - Zac Brown Band
Cause when she loves me I can live forever/ And she loves me I am untouchable/ She got whatever it is/ It blows me away

Oh this song...THIS SONG...how I LOVE this song.  This is what I want...it's the one thing missing from me life.  I want to make someone feel this way and I want to feel this way about someone.  It's my hope for myself.  About that 'knowing I can do it by myself" stuff from a few songs up....I think I'm ready for a little help! *grins*.... As you know, I'm finally actively working on this part *winks*

"Whatever It Is" is TOTALLY possible. I know first hand that settling isn't what we HAVE to do. That dreams and wants are waiting for us. I think we can see it better when we know we can do it by ourselves first.

If that makes any sense...lol...

Wow, love this post...really like how you found songs that represented different parts of you and your life.

How do I not know "The Mom Song?"

I hope Reese does play you in the movie of your life :)

There are several songs I haven't heard and I'm listening to the Zac Brown Band song right now. Liking it! I'll have to go through the rest of them, too.
