Friday Fragments: Road Trip(s)

My children spent a week with their father recently, which meant two ten-hour round trips in the car on bookend weekends for me ~ and Lawn Boy, as he graciously offered to come with me and actually ended up doing ALL the driving. I'm getting better.

*****

Did you know that while Chick-Fil-A will refill your fountain drink if you take the lid off, they will not do the same for your personal coffee mug? I was a little miffed, at 7:30 am after an hour and a half on the road, that they made me waste a coffee cup, because I turned around and poured it into my mug right at the counter. I was paying for the coffee either way!

*****

My children had an entertaining conversation about the merits of being named something like, "John Johnson," "William Williamson," or "Albert Albertson." The Boy declared that would be weird!

*****

We got sandwiches from Subway and the employee WARMED MY TUNA!  Lawn Boy had gone in without me.  He didn't ask, the girl just did it.  I've been going to Subway periodically since high school. I always get tuna.  I have never had someone warm it for me. In fact, I've never even been asked.  What in the world???

*****

At the same CFA the following weekend, the customer in front of me asked for grilled chicken and waffle fries FOR BREAKFAST, wanted a nutritional print out and to speak to a manager when the employee indicated that it could be done, but since it was not a "breakfast item," would take a few minutes to be specially made.  Seriously?  Lady, I respect that you may have valid reasons for your nutritional concerns, but you are in a FAST FOOD place and there is a Super Walmart across the street at which you could probably purchase something far healthier!

*****

There was a 9-year-old girl in the backseat channeling her inner Cybil.  Her trains of thought went something like, "I'm bored. I miss being at the beach with Daddy. There is an eyebrow hair on my cup. Can I get my eyebrows trimmed? They are too bushy!"

LAWD Help Us all, she is so my child.

Don't even get me started on her description of eating clams, "They taste good, but they are too chewy and they don't feel good in your mouth. When you bite them, they... UGH!"

I hate people who complain about the unhealthy food in fast food places. Really??? Where did you think you were?

My children have the most random conversations in the car. It is like just free association!

Happy Weekend!

That's so weird about the coffee. What a waste of a cup like that!! I like how your daughters mind went from the beach to getting her eyebrows done. Priceless!! :D --Lisa

Hi - stumbled onto your blog thru SITS - and truly enjoyed reading it!
So - was the warmed tuna good?
I have to admit, they once warmed mine too - but it had cheese as well, so it was more like a tuna melt....

I had a boss for awhile whose name was Tommy Thompson. His son was Tommy Thompson, Jr. I felt sorry for junior. I agree with the kids. It's weird.

I have to laugh at the randomness of the conversations, so sounds like my boys.. especially the youngest.

Plenty of strange names out there. I made one up once for a social site, Robin A. Bank.
Good to know you now know how to get your tuna warmed.

Strange. Chick-Fil-A is usually so cool. The server must not have had THEIR coffee yet ;-)

Warm tuna-- Unless it's grilled in a tuna melt, I can't imagine what they were thinking.

Have an fun Friday, jj

Eyebrow hair?
I just got Elayna's eyebrows waxed for the first time. She's only 12 but those things were unruly!! And she was begging. She did great.
I am all about eating non-breakfast foods for breakfast but most food places have specific timing and really, nutritional requests at a fast food place? She's fooling herself.

Oh, the irony of asking for nutritional info at a fast food joint. My son used to work at CFA and
I would tease him. You know they have those standard lines: "May I refresh your beverage?" and instead of "thank you" it's "my pleasure." Well, I always dared him to say, "May I refresh your pleasure?" and see if anyone noticed. (He was afraid the manager would.)

Stopping in from Friday Fragments and enjoyed your post.

I wonder if the mug refill thing is a health department rule.

I feel the same way as your kiddo about clams- love them but try not to think about it when eating! :)

Love your daughter's random conversations! I love listening to the kids in the car. And warm tuna - yuck - unless of course they were trying to make you a tuna melt?? With lots of melted cheese?

I thought of that too, but they will refill your fountain drinks!

I hope you get some "me" time after all that traveling. Yea for LB!

On our long trips the Mrs. is always wanting to drive. She knows that the passenger parent has to act as listener, mediator, in-flight steward/stewardess, in-flight tech support, entertainment coordinator, etc.

Have a good weekend.

I've been driving from Philly to Durham, N.C. on 95 every few weeks for a year now. Its tough:)
You hit on two of my pet pieves. Not refilling the coffee cup, seriously fast food worker take a leap and use your brain. just don't touch the cup with the rim of the pot..duh.
I fill with rage when someone in front of me in a fast food place acts like they are at the Ritz.
Glad the little ones are home safe..

One thing about long car trips they give the opportunity to think and listen.

I would like warm tuna, but that's weird she did it when you didn't ask.

We're going to be 10 hours from my kids' dad too. I am looking forward to the move but not to those car trips!

Man, two 10 hr drives doesn't sound like my cup o' tea. Glad Lawn Boy went with you! I love random convos in the car. Wait until their older! It'll be the best place to ask the really important questions! =) For some reason, kids seem to like spilling their guts while driving. =)
