Awful Children's TV

My children have horrible taste in TV shows. Now, mind you, since we have cheap cable that only gets us the major networks, they are pretty much limited to what they can find on NetFlix, but I still think they could make some better choices.

In recent weeks, my children have been somewhat redeemed, because Lawn Boy's children... well, their taste in TV is even worse!

My sister and I were lamenting over this recently. She and Sweet Baby B has come over to watch his children so I could go get mine from the airport.  I got the first "flight delayed" call after she arrived, so we were sitting at the table with more time than expected to chat.  LB's kids, having weathered sitting through a doctor's appointment with me that morning, played outside and done their reading, were settled in front of the TV in their after lunch coma.

They were finishing up watching Horrid Henry: The Movie  for the second time. The first time, they had picked it out from Red Box, because his oldest had read the books. He was so excited. I, blissfully, left for yoga 30 minutes in.  Imagine their delight when they found it for FREE on NetFlix and could watch it again! It finished up as they Evie and I were chatting and they switched to Power Rangers. Evie lamented that of all the TV shows for kids, this was the one she least cared for. She said she could stomach most Disney shows, but NOT the Power Rangers.

For my part, I prefer Disney to the shows and cartoons on Nickelodeon. I don't do Sponge Bob or Fairly Odd Parents~ also favorites of LB's kids.~ Evie and I both agree that the Disney Movie is not what it used to be. Teen Beach Movie ~ which I've already watched no less then 3 times in bits and pieces between LB's daughter and The Girl~ is no Johnny Tsunami!

Later that night, when we were finally heading back home after a HORRIDLY *wink wink* long day of delayed flights, Lawn Boy called to check in.  We chatted while The Saddle Club played in the background. Not a totally awful choice in kids shows except that The Girl insists on watching them EVERY TIME we travel and I can now recite every episode word for word.  Guess what Lawn Boy's kids wanted to watch with their dad while they tried to wait for us to get home???

He said no! *grins*

What do you think are the best and worst shows your children watch?

My kids enjoy Duck Dynasty and their father and I do too.

Worst probably SpongeBob.

I am so glad that my six year old son likes to watch what we do! Mostly sports, baseball & football games, The Amazing Race, Minute To Win It, Survivor, American Ninja Warrior, and even HGTV shows. Makes for one less battle around the house.

My son likes the colors on the Cartoon Network, but I think the cartoons these days are just AWFUL!!! I hate them, all the fighting and violence. What happened to Bugs Bunny and Scooby Doo (though I see him on the network from time to time, classic!)....

I think when my son gets older, he will watch the dvd's rather than the tv.... Ugh..

The worst is Sponge Bob. Ugh. Hate that show.
The best...hmmm...the only thing I think we can all agree on is Duck Dynasty. I just noticed that was exactly what Renegades said! Parallel lives over here!! --Lisa

Oh can we talk about Sponge Bob Square Pants? My kids loved that one and will still watch it. His little voice just gets under my skin!

My daughter used to love Yo Gabba Gabba. It frightened me.

Now she watches My Little Pony, which isn't bad, but they came out with a new DVD called Equestria Girls when they turn into teenagers--that was slightly disturbing.

My kids are getting older so I am able to tolerate more of what they watch. But, you still have to be careful about what they watch! Right now, they love The Amazing Race, and they are just starting to get into more comedies that we watch (as they head into tweens and teens) although much goes over the little ones heads (Modern Family is fast becoming a favourite).

I used to love Power Rangers! I wanted to be the pink one.

We had to cut cable for this location just because of cost, and I just don't miss it ;-) Doesn't it seem like the kids shows today have the parents being bumblers and the kids having to 'save the day'?? What a horrible message to convey!

What I wish I COULD sidestep is the Minecraft videos they drool and laugh over. The games is annoying enough without having to hear teen bop songs about the game :-(

There are some bizarre shows out there.

My boys have recently discovered Animaniacs and Tiny Toons- which I love.

It's hard to find a decent children's show these days. When my kid's watch tv, it's usually a movie and they are attached to watching the same one's over and over. Star Wars always takes center stage, but I've gotten them to watch a few from my day that they like as well including Goonies and Princess Bride. Of course they're a bit older (9 and 7) so that may not work for the preschool crowd. Drew, my preschooler is addicted to Thomas the Tank Engine. As long as it's not Dora (why the heck is she always yelling?!) I'll make it work. lol
